Asteroid 2019 SJ flew past Earth at 0.64 LD

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2019 SJ flew past Earth at 0.64 LD / 0.00163 AU (243 844 km / 151 517 miles) on September 16, 2019. This is the 43rd known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and 4th this month.

2019 SJ belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. It was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona on September 19, three days after its close approach.

Its estimated diameter is between 8.6 – 19 m (28 – 62 feet).

The object flew past us at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 8.67 km/s at 18:55 UTC.
