Strong and shallow M6.5 earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands region
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit South Sandwich Islands region at 17:54 UTC on April 9, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 47.7 km (29.6 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.5 at a depth of 44 km (27.3 miles).
The epicenter was located 62 km (38.5 miles) WSW of Montagu Island, 87 km (54 miles) WNW of Bristol Island and 112 km (69.6 miles) WSW of Saunders Island.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
This is the second M6+ earthquake to hit the region since M6.5 on April 5, 2019.
