Asteroid 2019 JY2 flew past Earth at 0.38 LD

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2019 JY2 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.38 LD / 0.00098 AU (146 606 km / 91 096 miles) on May 5, 2019. This is 22nd asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 LD since the start of the year.

The object was first observed on May 6, one day after it made a close approach to our planet.

2019 JY2 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. Its estimated diameter is between 3.3 and 7.3 m (10.8 – 23.9 feet).

It flew past us at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 8.05 km/s at 17:12 UTC on May 5, 2019.
