Very strong and deep M7.8 earthquake hits Fiji

A very strong and deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.8 hit Fiji at 15:49 UTC on September 6, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 608.6 km (378 miles). EMSC is reporting M7.8 at a depth of 627 km (389 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 47.3 km (29.4 miles) S of Levuka (population 8 360) and 101.8 km (63.3 miles) ESE of Suva (population 77 366), Fiji.
There are 100 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Some 295 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth, PTWC said.
