Fire destroys warehouse in one of the world's biggest produce markets - Paris, France

A huge fire broke out on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Rungis International Market – one of the world’s largest produce markets – in Paris, France, destroying its fruit and vegetable warehouse. The market supplies Paris and its surrounding with much of its fresh food.

The fire broke out shortly after 12:00 LT, producing a huge column of dark smoke over Paris. More than 100 firefighters and 30 fire engines battled the blaze until the mid-afternoon hours before it was brought under control.1

Shaoul Abramczyk, Chairman of the Mandar Group – the owner of Rungis, said the fire came as a shock, adding that they’ll not be able to fulfill orders from Monday and for several days.

“When a market operator is the victim of a tragedy of this nature, the whole market is struck at its heart”, Rungis market head Stephane Layani said.2

There were no injuries and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

This is just the latest in a series of incidents affecting food production and distribution centers across the world over the past two years.
