A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.9 hit the Macquarie Island region at 10:13 UTC on May 19, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.9 at a depth of 15 km (9 miles).

The epicenter was located about 1 060 km (660 miles) SW of Bluff and 1 225 km (761 miles) SW of Dunedin, New Zealand.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly resistant to earthquake shaking, though some vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are reinforced masonry and unreinforced brick with timber floor construction.
