Tropical Storm “Pabuk” to hit Thailand with heavy rain, strong winds

Tropical Storm "Pabuk" is expected to make landfall over southern Vietnam around 12:00 UTC on January 4, 2018, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. It will then continue toward Andaman and Nicobar Islands where landfall is possible sometime around 12:00 UTC on January 6. High amounts of rainfall are expected to affect southern Thailand, where flash flooding and landslides are possible. Southern Myanmar and Vietnam will also be affected by heavy rain and possible flooding.

At 15:00 UTC on January 3, the center of Tropical Storm "Pabuk" was located approximately 550 km (340 miles) SSW of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and 200 km (124 miles) ENE of Kota Bharu, Malaysia. The system is tracking NW at 16 km/h (10 mph) under the influence of a subtropical ridge located to the northeast.

Over the next 72 hours, Pabuk will continue tracking northwestward slightly increasing in intensity due to somewhat favorable environmental conditions and reach 75 km/h (46 mph) over the next 24 hours.

Landfall is expected somewhere between Pak Phanang and Hua Sai, possibly near Khanap Nak around 12:00 UTC on January 4, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (46 mph).

The storm will traverse over southern Thailand, exit into the Andaman Sea around 03:00 UTC, January 5 and continue toward Andaman and Nicobar Islands where landfall is possible sometime around 12:00 UTC on January 6.

Pabuk will then turn toward Bangladesh and Myanmar and quite possibly dissipate before reaching land.
