A rare out-of-season tropical cyclone formed near Vanuatu, South Pacific Ocean on May 18, 2022, and was named Gina. It is the 6th named storm of the 2021/22 South Pacific cyclone season. The season officially started on November 1, 2021, and ended on April 30, 2022.
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.9 hit the Macquarie Island region at 10:13 UTC on May 19, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.9 at a depth of 15 km (9 miles).

A large dust storm swept over parts of Iraq on May 16, 2022, grounding flights at Baghdad Airport and closing some schools, businesses and government offices. This is the 8th strong dust storm to hit the country since mid-April.
The Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon fire complex burning east of Santa Fe, New Mexico has spread to 121 000 ha (298 060 acres) on May 16, 2022, surpassing the state’s previous largest fire – Whitewater Baldy blaze in 2012.
