An intense polar blast affecting southern Brazil this week made headlines after more frosts hit the country's agricultural regions and dozens of cities received rare snow and freezing rain.

The situation also made authorities, activists, and religious leaders do what they can to limit suffering on the streets as temperatures in some areas of southern Brazil dropped below freezing.

On Friday, July 30, 2021, Brazil's biggest metropolis — São Paulo, recorded 4 °C (40 °F) — its lowest temperature in five years, according to the national meteorological institute.

Low temperatures are expected to continue through the weekend, with -10 °C (14 °F) expected in high-altitude areas of the country's southern region.
