Deep M6.1 earthquake hits Celebes Sea

A strong and deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit the Celebes Sea, between the Philippines and Indonesia, at 09:30 UTC on April 10, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 320 km (198 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 169 km (105 miles) SSW of Sarangani (population 7 506) and 200 km (124 miles) SSW of Glan (population 23 256), Philippines.

There are about 6 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Some 365 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown/miscellaneous types and heavy wood frame construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
