Major winter storm to strike California with excessive rain and heavy mountain snow
A major winter storm is forecast to strike California, U.S. with excessive rain and heavy mountain snow later today, January 26 through Thursday, January 28, 2021.
While this will be beneficial rain and snow given the ongoing drought conditions, in some instances it will be too much too quick, NWS warns.

Flash flooding will be possible across coastal California, especially near recent burn scar areas.
For non-burn scar areas, there could be rapid ponding of water in urban areas and low lying areas with poor drainage. We also cannot rule out mudslides or washouts in areas of steep terrain.
Meanwhile, heavy snow will result in dangerous travel conditions at higher elevations and through some of the mountain passes, and may be impossible at times.
Whiteout conditions, downed trees, and power outages are also possible in these areas.
