Tropical Cyclone “Burevi” to make landfall over northern Sri Lanka on December 2

Tropical Cyclone "Burevi" formed on December 1, 2020, in the Bay of Bengal as the 5th named storm of the 2020 North Indian Ocean cyclone season. The cyclone is forecast to continue intensifying before it makes landfall in northern Sri Lanka on December 2 (LT) as a Cyclonic Storm. A Cyclone Alert is in effect from Tamil Nadu, India to Sri Lanka.

At 18:00 UTC on December 1 (23:30 IST), the center of Cyclonic Storm "Burevi" was located about 330 km (205 miles) ESE of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, and 560 km (350 miles) ESE of Pamban, India.

The storm was moving WNW at 11 km/h (7 mph) and had a maximum sustained surface wind speed of 65 – 75 km/h (40 – 45 mph) and gusts to 85 km/h (55 mph), according to the IMD.

Burevi is expected to continue moving WNW and cross the Sri Lanka coast close to Trincomalee during the evening/night of December 2 (LT) as a Cyclonic Storm with a maximum wind speed of 75 – 85 km/h (45 – 53 mph) and gusts to 95 km/h (60 mph).

After moving over Sri Lanka, Burevi is expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area on the morning of December 3 (LT).

On the morning of December 4 (LT), it will likely cross the coast of southern Tamil Nadu between Kanniyakumari and Pamban.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls are expected over parts of Sri Lanka and southern India.

Flash floods are likely in parts of Sri Lanka, southern Tamil Nadu, and southern Kerala, India.
