Fatal flooding and landslides hit Gandaki Pradesh, Nepal

Heavy rains affecting Gandaki Pradesh, Nepal over the past couple of days have triggered floods and landslides, leaving at least 9 people dead and 3 severely damaged houses, as of Monday, June 15, 2020.

Local media reported a landslide on June 13 in Kushma municipality in the district of Prabat, which resulted in eight deaths and several houses damaged.

Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army have been conducting search and rescue operations, and have initially recovered three bodies on the day of the tragedy and five more on the following day. Search continues for one more missing person.

Disaster authorities reported other minor landslides in the districts of Sankhuwasabha, Tanahun, and Darchula. Roads and bridges were damaged across the Gandaki Pradesh Province. 

On June 10, heavy rain also triggered flooding in Terhathum, destroying two houses. During the same period, one person lost his life in flash floods in Bhaktapur.

More heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast over the country's central region on June 16.
