Adelaide shivers through coldest June morning in 76 years, Australia

Adelaide residents woke up to the city's coldest June morning in 76 years as the Bureau of Meteorology's (BOM) West Terrace station recorded a minimum of 0.9 °C (33.6 °F) around 05:30 LT on June 10 (20:00 UTC on June 9, 2020).

The state capital's previous June low was set on June 24, 1944, when temperatures plummeted to 0.8 °C (33.4 °F). BOM also noted that Parafield dropped to -2.4 °C (27.7 °F) on Wednesday– its lowest daily minimum temperature on record.

The Barossa Valley recorded 3.3 °C (37.9 °F), while Keith dropped to 2.2 °C (36 °F). Several areas saw temperatures below freezing, including Yunta at -4.4 °C (24.1 °F), and -3 °C (26.6 °F) both at Barossa and Clare Valleys.

According to BOM senior forecaster Mark Anolak, clear skies have generated record-low temperatures across the state, but it's possible that the worst is over.

"We do get these cold periods in winter and I can't rule out another cool spell," he stated. "But the long term climate average would suggest we're expecting a wetter than average winter, which means the temperatures are likely to be slightly above average as well."

"I think the worst of it will be either this morning or Thursday morning, but that should be the end of this spell of cold weather I think."

Temperatures are expected to hit a minimum of just 5 °C (41 °F) on Thursday, June 11, but will warm up to a minimum 11 °C (51.8 °F) by Friday, June 12.

The high-pressure system brought a cool change to wide swaths of the country since Monday, June 8, but rainfall has affected temperature levels.

A frost warning has been issued for Mount Lofty Ranges, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, and Upper South East.
