Strong advection of Saharan dust from North Africa into Europe
A huge load of Saharan dust is moving across the Mediterranean Sea into SE Europe on May 14, 2020, with additional deposits expected in the coming days. According to Severe Weather Europe (SWE) meteorologists, the dust may also reach the UK and Ireland over the weekend.
"A huge amount of Saharan dust has been advecting into our continent. With the strengthening upper ridge over southeast Europe, advection will persist into the weekend," SWE said.
"The dust load deposits are likely to be expected as north as central Germany, southern Poland, and also with small amounts over the UK and Ireland. The highest concentrations will be over Italy, Balkans and across the Alpine region."
