Hundreds of properties damaged or destroyed as floods and landslides hit Huanuco, Peru

Heavy rains since March 28, 2020, have been hitting the department of Huanuco in central Peru, leading to flooding and landslides. The severe weather disrupted lives in the area, partially or totally damaging hundreds of properties.

According to the country's National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI), floods and mudslides have resulted in 30 destroyed buildings, including houses, a church, and a bridge. 80 more homes sustained damages in the district of Huacracuhco, Maranon Province.

There were also interruptions to drinking water and power supply. Affected families were relocated to safe areas and relief goods were also distributed, said INDECI.

Local streams burst as well, following days of heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, another landslide occurred on March 30 in the San Rafael district, Ambo Province. Authorities have started cleanup operations with the help of heavy machinery.
