Dozens strong aftershocks after M7.1 earthquake in North Maluku, Indonesia

More than 35 strong aftershocks hit North Maluku, Indonesia in less than 24 hours after the M7.1 earthquake at 16:17 UTC (23:17 LT) on November 14, 2019.

Magnitudes ranged from 4.4 to 6.0, according to data provided by the USGS.

By observing the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a medium earthquake caused by deformation or enlargement in the Maluku Sea Plate. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake had a mechanism of upward movement (Thrust Fault), BMKG said November 15.

Based on sea level monitoring, a change in sea level in Ternate was up to 6 cm (2.3 inches) at 23:43  LT, in Jailolo as high as 9 cm (3.5 inches) at 23:43 LT and 10 cm (3.9 inches) in Bitung at 00:08 LT on November 15.

Early tsunami warning sparked panicked evacuation to higher grounds. The warning officially ended at 01:45 LT on November 15.

763 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking.

There are no reports of damage or injuries.

Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant against aftershocks, remain calm and make sure their buildings are earthquake resistant, and without cracks and damage.
