Strong and shallow M6.6 earthquake hits Tonga

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit Tonga at 22:43 UTC on November 4, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 13.4 km (8.3 miles). The quake hit 53 minutes after M6.1 (CSN; M6.0 USGS) near the coast of Coquimbo, Chile. It was followed by M5.5 at 22:46 UTC.

The epicenter was located 133.6 km (83 miles) W of Neiafu and 285 km (177 miles) N of Nuku'alofa, Tonga.

There are just a few people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.
