Strong M6.4 earthquake, numerous aftershocks near the coast of Mindanao, Philippines

A strong earthquake registered by the PHIVOLCS as M6.4 hit near the coast of Mindanao, Philippines at 02:02 UTC (10:02 LT) on September 29, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 60 km (37 miles). USGS is reporting M6.2 at a depth of 76.1 km (47.2 miles); EMSC M6.2 at a depth of 89 km (55.3 miles).

The epicenter was located 85 km (53 miles) SSE of Pondaguitan (population 2 143) and 104 km (65 miles) ESE of Caburan (population 12 618), Philippines.

There are about 12 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

5 586 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

Damage is not expected, PHIVOLCS said.

A tsunami was not produced.

PHIVOLCS registered more than 30 aftershocks over the next 5 hours. Magnitudes ranged from 2.3 – 3.8.
