Giant hail, 3 months' worth of rain in 40 minutes hit parts of northern Algeira

Giant hail, 3 months' worth of rain in 40 minutes hit parts of northern Algeira

The same weather system that left 6 people dead in Spain, affected northern Algeria by the end of the last week, dumping very heavy rain and giant hailstones.

Algeria's capital received 40 mm (1.5 inches) of rain in 40 minutes on September 13, which is the equivalent of three months of normal rainfall for the city.

Floodwaters inundated subway stations and the city's new airport, turned major boulevards into muddy rivers and trapped drivers in cars, GulfNews reports.

There were no deaths reported, but officials said 'the damage is enormous.'

The rain was accompanied by giant hailstones, causing further damage across the affected region.

Heavy rain and hail were produced by the same storm that hit Spain, leaving at least 6 people dead. Officials are describing it as Spain's most devastating storm since 1879 when over 1 000 people lost their lives.
