Local authorities confirmed seven fatalities after a landslide caused by heavy rains hit Ethiopia's Southern regional state on September 8, 2019.

The state's communication office reported that five out of seven victims were from one family.

Ethiopia has been receiving storms since the rainy season began in July. Forecasts said the season will last until September.

Heavy rains typically result in landslides in some areas of the country. Just last month, August 2019, four people were killed by a landslide in the same region.

Last year, August 2018, a landslide took 23 lives in the country's Oromia region. 50 people died after a similar event in May 2016.
