Tropical Cyclone “Podul” hits Vietnam, leaves 2 people dead, 61 500 affected in Philippines

Tropical cyclone "Podul," named Yangliu in China and Jenny in the Philippines killed 2 and affected over 61 500 people in Central-Northern Luzon. The storm made landfall in central Vietnam early Friday and has since degraded into a tropical depression.

Despite losing winds strength as the storm moved inland, heavy rainfall will continue moving inland along the center and southern side of the storm into southeastern Asia, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Eric Leister said. Locations from Da Nang to Ha Tinh experienced the worst of the storm.

Up to 250 mm (10 inches) of rain is expected from north-central Vietnam into central Laos and northern Thailand through August 31. There is a high risk of flooding and mudslides throughout this region.

The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) confirmed 2 people were killed, 2 others were injured, and around 3 180 people were evacuated in the Philippines following the powerful storms. The province of Aurora received the most impact.

Southern and western parts of Hainan, China are expected to have better weather conditions on August 30 after heavy winds and rains w on August 29.
