Landslides, flash floods wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh

Extensive rainfall, floods and landslides are wreaking havoc across the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on August 17 and 18, 2019. The state has so far received 200% above average rains this monsoon.

Incessant rains in Himachal Pradesh have led to the death of 18 people since August 17, 2019.

The rains have left hundreds of people stranded as several roads including national highways have been extensively damaged due to the landslides.

Eight people have died in Shimla, two each in Kullu, Simaur, Chamba, and Solan. One death each has been confirmed in Una and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Two persons were killed in a house collapse in Chamba district, according to Chamba Suprindentant of Police Monica Bhutunguru. In Kullu, a man fell into a drain even when locals tried to rescue him. A tourist died in a landslide in Kullu between Manikaran and Barsheni, according to Kullu Deputy Commissioner Richa Verma. In Solan district, 2 persons were killed in a building collapse at Manakpura which falls under Baddi Tehsil. 

The Chief Minister, Jai Ram Thakur mentioned on August 18, 2019, that all the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to keep a close watch on the current situation and make sure there is complete safety of the people. "Tourists have also been advised to stay away from river beds as there is always the possibility of a sudden rise in water levels due to flash floods," he said. The Chief Minister added that Himachal Pradesh has suffered a loss of nearly 490 crore Rupees in this monsoon.

All the schools and colleges will remain closed on August 19, 2019, in Shimla, capital of Himachal Pradesh, and other parts of the region.

On August 18, 2019, the showers were the highest rainfall recorded in Himachal Pradesh over the past 70 years according to IMD. 

The state has so far received 200% above average rains this monsoon.
