Massive floods hit NW Turkey, leaving 7 people missing
7 people are missing after massive floods and landslides hit Turkey's northwestern province of Düzce on Wednesday night, July 17 and Thursday, July 18, 2019.
Turkey's interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, said Thursday that 135 people have been rescued, noting that rescue units spotted 212 residents who were stranded and six helicopters were used for search and rescue operations.
7 people went missing in the village of Esmahanim, 4 of them children.
The flood completely destroyed a rafting facility on the Melen River in Cumayeri district, forcing authorities to send a military helicopter to airlift 8 people. Two of them were injured. Over 10 cattle drowned in the disaster, the Daily Sabah reports.
21 people working at hazelnut farms in Dilaver village were rescued from the roof of their homes after the first floor flooded with rainwater.
Düzce Gov. Zülkif Dağlı said that the workers coming from southeastern provinces to work at the farmlands also had to be rescued by a helicopter.
Hakan Öztaş, deputy mayor of Akçakoca, said heavy rainfall caused stream flooding, which made it impossible for people residing in villages to reach the city center. All of them were airlifted out of their flooded homes.
