Deep M6.1 earthquake hits SW of Kyushu, East China Sea
A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit SW of Kyushu, Japan at 00:57 UTC on July 13, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 251 km (155.9 miles). JMA is reporting M5.9 at a depth of 250 km (155.3 miles).
The epicenter was located 170 km (105 miles) NW of Naze, Kagoshima and 303 km (188 miles) N of Nago, Okinawa, Japan.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
59 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
This earthquake poses no tsunami risk, JMA said.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are heavy wood frame and reinforced/confined masonry construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
