Record low temperature set in the Netherlands, July noticeably colder across Europe
The temperature at the former Twente airbase in the eastern Netherlands dropped to -1.6 °C (29.1 °F) overnight July 4, 2019, setting a new low-temperature record for the month of July and greeting residents with fresh summer frost.
The previous record for the lowest temperature at 10 cm (3.9 inches) was -1.5 °C (29.3 °F) set in Gilze and Rijen on July 1, 1984.
This is only the 7th time since Dutch meteorologists started taking temperature measurements at a height of 10 cm (3.9 inches) in 1971 that there has been frost in the Netherlands in July. The last two times were on July 9 and 10, 2015, and before that on July 1, 1984, according to Weerplaza.
Colder than usual temperatures in northern Europe are signaling a welcome change after severe heatwave affected much of the continent in the second half of June. While things still might change a bit, July is going to be noticeably colder than the last couple of weeks.
