The largest forest fire in the history of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
A forest fire reignited across Ludwigslust-Parchim District, west of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State, Germany on June 30, burning an area of more than 450 ha (1 111 acres) so far and becoming the largest forest fire in the history of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The fire is affecting a former military training area, which is heavily contaminated with ammunition, DG ECHO reports. The authorities have evacuated 800 people in the towns of Alt Jabel, Jessenitz-Werk, Volzrade and Trebs, while more than 500 have been affected by the fire.
A disaster alert was triggered for Ludwigslust-Parchim district on June 30.
Strong wind and the hazardous nature of the area are making the fire's extinction difficult.
According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire danger forecast is expected to remain high in the affected areas between July 2 – 3.
The European Commission's Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR366) was activated on July 1 at 17:14 UTC to provide satellite maps of the area.
