With 34.4 °C (94 °F) on May 14, 2019, Key West recorded its highest May temperature since records began in 1872. The previous monthly record was 33.8 C (93 °F) set on May 31, 1881. The previous daily record was 32.2 °C (90 °F) registered in 1874 and 1878.

Marathon recorded 35 °C (96 °F) on the same day, breaking the previous daily record of 33.8 °C (93 °F) set in 1998 and previous monthly record of 35 °C (95 °F) set on May 13, 2019.

The warmest all-time temperature in Key West is 36.1 °C (97 °F), which occurred just twice, Meteorologist Joe Astolfi wrote for Weather Nation. First on July 19, 1880, and again on August 29, 1956.

Easterly tradewinds and persistent sea breezes usually keep Key West’s temperatures in check, Astolfi said. "That’s why Tuesday’s 34.4 °C (94 °F) was such a rarity for May when the average high is 85 °F [29.4 °C]."
