At least 4 people were killed in two separate incidents after being hit by a bolt of lightning produced by a severe thunderstorm in the ancient holy city of Nashik, Maharashtra, western India.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said northern and western parts of the state witnessed unseasonal rain on April 14 and 15, produced by cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan, from which a trough is extending towards south Madhya Maharashtra across the Gujarat region

“Since the last few days, there were indications of weather activities suitable for rain over Maharashtra. While there were light showers in the western suburbs of Mumbai, other parts of Maharashtra like Dhule, Nandurbar, Satara and Sangli, too, witnessed unseasonal rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and lightning,” said an IMD official.

The first lightning incident took place during a cricket game Sunday evening, April 14.

Suddenly it started to rain heavily and the children started running for cover. However, three of them took shelter under a nearby tree when lightning struck killing them on the spot, Uniindia reports.

The second incident took place in Chandwad taluka Sunday night, killing a 40-year-old woman.

Officials said the storm uprooted trees and damaged mango and onion crops.
