Floods in Iran: Death toll stands at 78, 1 136 injured and around 10 million affected

Severe flooding has been affecting most of Iran since mid-March, particularly provinces of Golestan, Fars, Khuzestan and Lorestan Provinces. 28 of Iran's 31 provinces have been affected.

Several cities and villages in Khuzestan Province were evacuated while 5 districts in Ahvaz City are under evacuation order, ECHO reported April 11. The risk of overflow from the Karkheh Dam remains a concern.

Authorities said at the beginning of April they are dealing with extreme flooding and heavy rainfall which at times equaled more than half of the annual average within 24 hours.  Golestan Province, for example, received 70% of its annual rainfall in just one day. This is unprecedented for the past 300 years, IFRC said.

The country's agricultural sector suffered massive damage, estimated to more than 47 trillion rials (about $350 million USD), as of April 4.

36% of the country's entire road network has been damaged, 84 bridges and nearly 2 200 rural roads washed away.

As of April 11 at 08:00 UTC, 78 people are reported dead, 1 136 injured and 10 million affected.
