M6.5 earthquake hits South Sandwich Islands region

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.5 hit the South Sandwich Islands at 16:14 UTC on April 5, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 58.4 km (36.3 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.5 at a depth of 80 km (50 miles).

The epicenter was located 44 km (28 miles) N of Zavodovski Island, 96 km (60 miles) N of Visokoi Island and 578 km (360 miles) ESE of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
