Deep M6.3 earthquake hits Bolivia

A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.3 hit Bolivia at 05:03 UTC on March 15, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 358.3 km (222.6 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.4 at a depth of 356 km (221 miles).

The epicenter was located 30 km (18 miles) S of Cliza (population 8 654), 35 km (22 miles) S of Punata (population 15 194), and 54 km (33 miles) SSE of Sacaba (population 107 628).

Some 2 393 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are mud wall and informal (metal, timber, GI etc.) construction.
