Deep M6.2 earthquake hits near the coast of Fiji

A strong and deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit Fiji at 08:12 UTC on March 10, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 567.4 km (352.5 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.2 at a depth of 560 km (347.9 miles).

The epicenter was located 215 km (134 miles) S of Levuka, 260 km (162 miles) SE of Labasa and 308 km (192 miles) SE of Suva.

There are about 6 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

The quake was followed by M4.8 at 08:23 UTC at a depth of 570.3 km (354.3 miles).

It was too deep to cause a tsunami.
