Deep M6.2 earthquake hits near Ndoi Island, Fiji
A deep earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit near Ndoi Island, Fiji at 19:56 UTC on January 26, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 579 km (359 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.2 at a depth of 594 km (369 miles). GFZ is reporting it as M5.6 (preliminary) at a depth of 590 km (366 miles).
The epicenter was located 379 km (235 miles) W of Haveluloto, Tonga and 390 km (242 miles) SSE of Levuka, Fiji.
There are about 900 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
387 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
This earthquake was too deep to cause a tsunami.
This is the second M6+ earthquake of the day, and the second deep M6+ earthquake of the day. It comes after M6.2 hit the Solomon Islands at 03:51 UTC at a depth of 358 km (222 miles).
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
