Floods and landslides death toll jumps to 59, 25 missing in South Sulawesi, Indonesia
Deadly floods and landslides triggered by several days of heavy rain left at least 59 people dead and 25 missing in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi, BNPB's Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said January 25, 2019.
At least 47 people were injured and 3 481 evacuated after heavy rain and strong winds hit South Sulawesi on January 23 and 24, causing rivers to burst their banks.
4 857 homes were submerged and 79 damaged in 106 villages across South Sulawesi.
In addition, a least 9 bridges were damaged or destroyed and at least 11 876 hectares (29 350 acres) of paddy fields are underwater.

The death toll almost doubled in just 24 hours, from 30 to 59.
Gowa district was the worst hit, with 44 casualties, Head of South Sulawesi's disaster mitigation agency Syamsibar told AFP. "I've never seen something this bad – this is the worst," Syamsibar said.
The floods started to recede in parts of the province on January 24, but authorities still urge people to remain cautious and be aware of the possibility of new floods and landslides.
