At least six people were killed in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province after heavy rain falling for more than 24 hours caused Jeneberang River to overflow on Monday, January 21, 2019.

According to Adnan Purichta Ichsan, Gowa regency Regent, 10 people remain missing in floods and a landslide after the river overflowed. Hundreds of houses were flooded (damaged or destroyed) in Pangkabinanga Village, Pallangga District as well as four bridges in the province.

Ichsan added that heavy rain forced Bili-Bili Dam operators to open the floodgate which combined with high levels of Jeneberang's second water source – Jenelata River – to cause the flood.

The flooded sub-districts include Pallangga, Tompobulu, Pattallassang, Sombaopu, Barombong and Bontomarannu.

According to the  East Tribune, Bili Bili Operational Expert Team urged residents not to panic, because the condition of the water in the dam is not yet in the alert category. Water discharge is still normal, it said.
