Deadly landslide hits Niteroi, Rio de Janeriro, Brazil

At least 10 people have been killed and 11 others injured after heavy rains caused large landslide in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region, Brazil on November 10, 2018.

The event took place in the Boa Esperança Community in Piratininga, Niterói, during early morning hours (LT) of Saturday, November 10.

Authorities said the rain loosened a large boulder, which then struck 6 homes and a pizzeria.

11 people were rescued from the debris, firefighters said, adding the death toll could rise as rescue workers continue search and rescue operations.

Civil defense authorities said they received 135 calls for assistance between November 7 and 9 due to heavy rains.

Roberto Robadey, Rio's civil defense department head, told Globo TV network a state of alert was declared for Niteroi due to heavy rains and its residents urged to move to safer locations.

Floods and landslides are common in Brazil. The country's worst landslide disaster took place in 2011 when whole hillsides collapsed after heavy rains hit the state of Rio de Janeiro, killing nearly 1 000 people.
