Strong M6.2 earthquake hits Tarapaca, Chile

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit Tarapaca, Chile at 22:19 UTC on November 1, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 95 km (59 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.2 at a depth of 100 km (62 miles).

The epicenter was located 89 km (55.3 miles) NE of Iquique (population 227 449), Chile and 154 km (96 miles) SSE of Tacna (population 185 999), Peru.

There are about 300 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).

This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact based on the magnitude and the affected population and their vulnerability.

Little or no landsliding and liquefaction is expected, but some could have occurred in highly susceptible areas.
