A severe thunderstorm hit the city of Dubrovnik, southern Croatia overnight Tuesday, October 2, 2018, dropping 6 months' worth of rain in just 3 hours. Numerous homes, businesses and roads were flooded.

According to DHMZ meteorologist Zoran Vakula, the storm dropped record-shattering 259.2 mm (10.2 inches) of rain between 05:00 and 08:00 CET (03:00 – 06:00 UTC). This is more rain in just three hours than Dubrovnik received in the past 6 months together (from March 26 to October 1).

The amount set city's 24-hour rainfall record for any day of the year since reliable measurements began in 1961. The previous 24-hour rainfall record was 154.8 mm (6.09 inches) set on October 13, 2002.

In addition, yesterday's 3-hour rain amount is more than total monthly rainfall measured in any month since September 2014.

The rain caused instant flooding, prompting authorities to warn drivers to take extra care. It flooded numerous homes, businesses and roads, caused multiple landslides and made the region's freshwater temporarily undrinkable.
