Record 41.1 mm (1.6 inches) of rain in 10 minutes floods Lausanne, Switzerland

A record-breaking 41.1 mm (1.6 inches) of rain was recorded in Switzerland's Lausanne on June 11, 2018, breaking the previous record of 36.1 mm (1.42 inches) recorded in Eschenz, Thurgau canton in 2017.

Severe thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain on parts of Switzerland for the third day in a row. On Monday night, June 11, the storm caused severe disruption to the cities of Geneva and Lausanne, flooding streets and houses and cutting some rail lines, SwissInfo reports.

Lausanne emergency services received over 500 calls by 03:00 local time Tuesday, authorities said, adding that the city sustained extensive damage.

The storm produced record-breaking 41.1 mm (1.6 inches) in a 10-minute period around 23:00 local time, June 11 in Lausanne region. The previous 10-minute record for the country was 36.1 mm (1.42 inches), recorded in Eschenz, Thurgau canton in 2017.

June 12 marked the second straight night of heavy rain in the country, with the worst of it in Jura canton where more than 100 firefighters spent the night pumping out flooded cellars after river Schuelte burst its banks. The villages of Courroux and Vicques were still practically cut off on the morning of June 13.

Geneva also received major downpour with flooding in Genthod, Versoix and Veyrier.
