A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit south of the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand at 01:45 UTC on May 18, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 10.6 km (6.6 miles).
The epicenter was located 544.2 km (338.1 miles) NE of Opotiki (population 4 044) and 556.6 km (345.8 miles) NE of Gisborne (population 34 274), New Zealand.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Some 3 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
