Violent explosions at Stromboli volcano, Italy

An intense explosive sequence took place at Stromboli volcano in Italy on the morning of April 24, 2018.
The first explosion took place at 09:05 UTC and emitted abundant ash along with incandescent material and large lava blocks up to 250 m (820 feet) above the crater that fell in the summit area and along the Sciara del Fuoco, INGV said.
This explosion was followed by a second explosive event at 09:06 UTC and was characterized by a modest fountain. The third explosion took place at 09:10 UTC with the launch of pyroclastic material of lower intensity, compared to the first explosion.
"This explosion produced an ash cloud that was quickly dispersed to the southeast," INGV added.
Violent explosive sequences such as this one, and classified as major explosions, also occurred on March 7 and 18, 2018 and in 2017 on July 26, October 23, November 1, and December 1.
While these are more violent explosions than those usually occurring at Stromboli, they are a part of phenomenology typical of the summit activity at the volcano, characterized by explosions of variable energy, INGV concluded.
