One person killed after tornado hits Greensboro in Guilford County, North Carolina

Significant damage was reported in the Greensboro area of North Carolina's Guilford County on Sunday, April 15, 2018 after an apparent tornado swept through the area.

An apparent tornado touched down near Greensboro about 17:15 EDT on April 15, damaging hundreds of homes and businesses and killing one person. The tornado, although not yet officially confirmed, was first spotted near US 29 and East Gate City Boulevard.

Guilford County EMA said a 48-year-old man died when a tornado picked up a tree and landed it on his car, crushing him. The man's spouse was also in the car with him at the time. She survived.

Damage was reported to numerous homes, along with many trees and power lines down at Nealton Road and October Lane. In addition, an elementary school's roof was peeled off and windows were blown out near 4E Greensboro where several mobile units were reportedly destroyed.

Officials later said three elementary schools – Erwin, Hampton and Peeler Open sustained severe damage.
