Deadly floods and landslides hit Indonesia after extreme rainfall


Floods and landslides left several people dead or missing and more than 6 500 people living in parts of South and East Jakarta displaced due to floods as authorities were forced to release water from a major reservoir in the city of Bogor on Monday, February 5, 2018. They said the region saw extreme rainfall and thousands of homes inundated, some of them in flood waters above 2 meters (6.5 feet) deep. Jakarta residents were warned late Tuesday to prepare for additional flooding.

Authorities warned residents, especially those living near rivers, that floods could hit Jakarta after they were forced to open sluice gates on a major upstream reservoir in the city of Bogor on February 5. Dramatic local TV footage later showed fast-running rivers of muddy water gushing down roads, bringing down trees and homes in the hilly areas around capital Jakarta.

Authorities said thousands of homes have been flooded, more than 6 500 people displaced and 11 450 people spread over 12 districts in East, South and West Jakarta affected by floods, as of Tuesday afternoon, February 6.

"Although thousands of houses have been inundated, a lot of residents declined to evacuate. They opted to stay at their house, having moved their belongings to the upper floor of their house," Head of Information Data Center and Public Relations of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

In East Jakarta, 1 575 Kramatjati district residents were evacuated, followed by Jatinegara district with 1 057. Meanwhile, in South Jakarta most of the affected residents, numbering 3 200, live in Pancoran district, followed by Tebet district with 700 people.

A 20 m (65.6 feet) stretch of an underpass retaining wall near Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport collapsed around 17:00 local time Monday, burying a car with two female passengers. One 24-year-old woman was conscious when rescuers evacuated her from the car after a 10-hour rescue operation and was immediately rushed to hospital but later succumed to hear injuries. The second woman was also pulled from the rubble and is reportedly in a stable condition.

At least 5 people were buried after a landslide hit Warung Menteng village in Bogor regency, West Java. Authorities said Tuesday they recovered 3 bodies while two boys, aged 8 and 10, remain missing.

A landslide that hit a house in Bayu village of Banyuwangi district, East Java province left two people dead and one critically injured after heavy rain hit the region, authorities confirmed Monday.

The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency called on residents of Jakarta to prepare for additional floods as the alert status of the Katulampa Dam in Bogor increased to level II on Tuesday evening.

"In less than nine hours, waters will hit the Manggarai sluice gate [in South Jakarta]," The Jakarta Post quoted a statement released by the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency.

The regions likely to be affected by the floods in South Jakarta are Srengseng Sawah, Pejaten Timur, Kalibata, Pengadegan, Rawajati, Kebon Baru, Bukit Duri, Pasar Manggis and Guntur.

In East Jakarta, the regions likely to be affected are Balekambang, Cawang, Cililitan, Kebon Manggis, Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu.

In Central Jakarta, they are Menteng, Karet Tengsin, Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, Petamburan, Kampung Bali, Cideng, Pegangsaan, Cikini, Kwitang, Kebon Sirih, Istiqlal, Pasar Baru, Kartini, Gunung Sahari, Kebon Kelapa and Petojo Utara.

In West Jakarta, they are Kota Bambu Utara, Kota Bambu Selatan, Jatipulo, Tomang, Jembatan Besi, Angke, Maphar, Keagungan and Mangga Besar.
