Typhoon “Saola” dumped record-breaking rain on Miyazaki, Japan
Typhoon "Saola," the 22nd named storm of the 2017 Pacific typhoon season, dumped record-breaking rain on the island of Kyushu, Japan over the weekend. At least 3 people have been injured.
Within 24 hours to Sunday morning, October 29, 2017, the cities of Miyazaki and Nichinan in Kyushu's Miyazaki Prefecture recorded more than 400 mm (15.74 inches), a record for the region. Cruise port of Aburatsu recorded 424 mm (16.69 inches).
Two women, aged 79 and 86, were injured in Miyazaki and Oita prefectures after they fell down and broke their legs.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the Tokai region would get up to 180 mm (7 inches) of rain over a 24-hour period ending 12:00 JST, Monday, October 30, 150 mm (5.90 inches) in the Hokuriku and Kanto-Koshin regions, and 100 mm (3.93 inches) in the Tohoku region.
The typhoon disturbed transportation networks, forcing operators to cancel some services. According to the Japan Times, a total of 86 flights, mostly in Kyushu and Okinawa, were canceled Sunday.
Saola affected the country in the wake of Typhoon "Lan," which brought heavy rain and strong winds to much of the country just a week ago, killing 7 people and injuring nearly 100 others.
