A surprisingly violent hailstorm accompanied by heavy rain hit the city of Corrientes and its surroundings on Sunday, October 8, 2017, causing massive damage to cars and properties.

The storm hit in the middle of the afternoon while people were voting for the provincial governor. Several neighborhoods and city center were reportedly flooded.

According to local media reports, the hailstorm severely damaged 20 cars traveling on Posadas-Corrientes road between Scorza Cué and Ita Ibaté (Route 12).

Drivers said they couldn't do anything but get off the road. Some of the stones were as big as oranges and weighted half a kilo (1.1 lbs), eyewitnesses said.

This is the second severe storm to hit this route since Friday, October 6, but the hail was much larger this time.

There are no reports of injuries, but the material damage is very high.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a special report in which it warned of the dangerous front that will affect the northeast region of the country at least until Thursday, October 12.
