Strong and shallow M6.3 earthquake near Balleny Islands / South Magnetic Pole

A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS was recorded near Balleny Islands / South Magnetic Pole at 20:48 UTC on October 8, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.3 at a depth of 40 km (24.8 miles).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 1 901.7 km (1 181.6 miles) SW of Bluff (population 1 938) and 1 922.7 km (1 194.7 miles) SSW of Invercargill (population 47 287), New Zealand.
