Winter is coming to Urals and Siberia with record daily lows
The winter of 2017/18 announced itself in Urals and Siberia, Russia this week with abnormally cold temperatures, between 3 – 10 °C (5.4 – 18 °F) below average.
Anomalously cold weather is affecting the Urals and southern Siberia over the past couple of days under the influence of large anticyclone.
Meteo stations across the region are recording average air temperatures between 3 and 5 °C (3 – 9 °F) and in places by 5 – 10 °C (9 – 18 °F) below the climatic norm. Minimum air temperatures in the region rarely climbed above 0 °C (32 °F).

In Omsk, a record daily low temperature was registered on September 26, with -6.2 °C (20.8 °F). This broke the previous record for the date of -4.5 °C (23.9 °F) set in 1955.
At the same time, eastern Siberia is under the influence of an active cyclonic vortex which crossed the region from the SW to NE, bringing heavy precipitation in the form of snow and rain accompanied by almost hurricane-force winds (in places up to 112 km/h / 70 mph), MeteoTV reported.
Abnormally cold weather in the region is expected to continue at least through the rest of the week.
