Strong and shallow M6.4 earthquake hits near Auckland Islands, New Zealand
A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the New Zealand's GeoNet hit near the Auckland Islands, New Zealand at 07:00 UTC (19:00 NZST) on July 11, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 34 km (21 miles). USGS is reporting M6.6 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 467 (290 miles) SW of Bluff (population 1 938), 483.9 km (300.7 miles) SW of Invercargill (population 47 287), and 539 (335 miles) SW of Gore (population 12 108), New Zealand.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake, PTWC said.
62 000 people are estimated to have felt weak shaking.
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly resistant to earthquake shaking, though some vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are ductile reinforced concrete frame and reinforced masonry construction.
