Los Angeles breaks 131-year-old daily record high temperature
Weather stations located in downtown Los Angeles measured a record-breaking daily high temperature of 36.6 °C (98 °F) on Saturday, July 8, 2017. The previous record for the day was 35 °C (95 °F) set in 1886.
The record comes amid relentless heatwave and several quick-moving wildfires that threatened hundreds of homes and forced thousands of Californians to evacuate.

At the same time, Sandberg measured 39.4 °C (103 °F), breaking the previous record of 36.6 °C (98 °F) set in 2008, Camarillo Airport and NWS Oxnard recorded 32.2 °C (90 °F), breaking their previous record of 30.5 °C (87 °F) set in 1992, while Burbank and Woodland Hills tied their records of 39.4 °C (103 °F) and 44.4 °C (112 °F), both set in 1985.
The temperatures in Los Angeles should begin cooling on Sunday by as much as 3 to 6 °C (5 to 10 °F) in some areas, with the trend continuing over the next few days, NWS Meteorologist Todd Hall said.
"The coast is expected to cool to the mid-70s [~24 C] and downtown to the mid-80s [~29 C] during the same period," he said.
